MailPoet

The MailPoet integration for Flexi Subscription lets you connect subscription lifecycle events with MailPoet automations. You can automatically communicate with subscribers when their subscription is activated, becomes pending, is cancelled, expires, completes its trial, or enters a grace period.

The integration is available with Flexi Subscription Pro and requires the MailPoet plugin to be installed and active.

Requirements #

Before configuring the integration, make sure you have:

  • Flexi Subscription installed and activated
  • Flexi Subscription Pro installed and activated
  • MailPoet installed and activated
  • MailPoet configured on your WordPress site

Flexi Subscription automatically detects MailPoet when it is available.

Enable the MailPoet Integration #

From your WordPress dashboard:

  1. Go to Flexi Subscription → Integrations.
  2. Locate MailPoet under the Marketing & CRM integrations.
  3. Make sure MailPoet is installed and active.
  4. Enable the MailPoet integration.

Once enabled, Flexi Subscription begins making its subscription lifecycle events available for MailPoet automation workflows.

If MailPoet is unavailable or the integration is disabled, Flexi Subscription simply skips MailPoet processing. Your normal subscription workflow continues to work.

Supported Subscription Events #

Flexi Subscription provides MailPoet with the following subscription lifecycle events.

Subscription Activated #

Triggered when a subscription becomes active.

You can use this event for:

  • Subscription welcome emails
  • Onboarding sequences

Subscription Pending #

Triggered when a subscription enters the Pending state.

This can be useful for:

  • Payment completion instructions
  • Subscription status notifications
  • Customer follow-up sequences

The initial Pending event is generated only after the subscription, subscription metadata, and related order information have been created.

Subscription Cancelled #

Triggered when a customer’s subscription is cancelled.

Possible uses include:

  • Cancellation confirmation emails
  • Cancellation surveys
  • Customer feedback requests
  • Retention campaigns
  • Win-back sequences

Subscription Expired #

Triggered when the subscription reaches its expiration state.

This event can be used for:

  • Expiration notifications
  • Re-subscription campaigns
  • Win-back emails
  • Access expiration information

Subscription Trial Ended #

Triggered when the subscription’s trial period ends.

You can use this event for:

  • Trial completion emails
  • Paid subscription onboarding
  • Billing reminders
  • Trial-to-paid customer journeys

Grace Period Started #

Triggered when an eligible subscription enters its configured grace period.

Typical uses include:

  • Failed-payment reminders
  • Payment recovery emails
  • Update-payment-method instructions
  • Grace-period warnings

Subscription Data Available to MailPoet #

When Flexi Subscription sends a lifecycle event to MailPoet, it provides the subscriber email address together with subscription-related information.

Available data includes:

Subscription Information #

  • subscription_id — Flexi Subscription ID
  • subscription_status — Current subscription status
  • start_date — Subscription start date
  • next_renewal_date — Next scheduled renewal date

Customer Information #

  • user_id — WordPress customer/user ID
  • user_email — Customer email address

Billing Information #

  • schedule_timing_per — Billing interval
  • schedule_timing_option — Billing period
  • price — Subscription price
  • signup_fee — Subscription sign-up fee, when applicable

Product Information #

  • product_id — Subscription product ID
  • product_variation_id — Variation ID for variable subscription products, when applicable

Order Information #

  • order_id — Related WooCommerce order ID

The available data allows MailPoet workflows to use subscription context when communicating with customers.

Creating a MailPoet Automation #

After enabling the integration, open the MailPoet automation area from your WordPress dashboard.

Create an automation using the appropriate Flexi Subscription subscription event as the trigger.

For example, you could create an onboarding workflow based on Subscription Activated:

  1. Enable the MailPoet integration in Flexi Subscription.
  2. Go to MailPoet → Automations.
  3. Create a new automation.
  4. Select the relevant Flexi Subscription activation trigger.
  5. Add the email or other automation steps you want to perform.
  6. Configure your email content.
  7. Review the automation.
  8. Activate it.

When a qualifying subscription becomes active, Flexi Subscription provides the subscriber and subscription information to the MailPoet automation.

Example Automation Workflows #

New Subscriber Onboarding #

Trigger: Subscription Activated

Possible workflow: Subscription Activated → Welcome Email → Getting Started Email → Product Tips

This is useful for memberships, services, software subscriptions, and other recurring products.

Pending Subscription Reminder #

Trigger: Subscription Pending

Possible workflow: Subscription Pending → Payment Reminder → Payment Instructions

This can help communicate with customers whose subscriptions require additional payment action.

Cancellation Follow-up #

Trigger: Subscription Cancelled

Possible workflow: Subscription Cancelled → Cancellation Confirmation → Feedback Request → Win-back Email

Subscription Expiration #

Trigger: Subscription Expired

Possible workflow: Subscription Expired → Expiration Notice → Re-subscribe Offer

Trial Completion #

Trigger: Subscription Trial Ended

Possible workflow: Trial Ended → Trial Completion Email → Subscription Information

Grace Period Recovery #

Trigger: Grace Period Started

Possible workflow: Grace Period Started → Payment Problem Notification → Update Payment Details Reminder

Variable Subscription Products #

The MailPoet integration supports subscription information for variable products.

When the subscription is associated with a variation, Flexi Subscription can provide both:

  • the main subscription product ID
  • the product variation ID

This allows your automation workflow to retain information about the actual subscription variation purchased by the customer.

Integration Safety #

The MailPoet integration is designed so that an external integration problem does not interrupt the core subscription lifecycle.

If MailPoet encounters an error while processing an integration event, Flexi Subscription isolates the failure from subscription processing.

For example, a MailPoet error should not prevent Flexi Subscription from:

  • activating a subscription
  • changing a subscription status
  • processing its lifecycle
  • maintaining its renewal information

Integration failures can also be logged for troubleshooting without breaking the underlying subscription operation.

Disabling the Integration #

You can disable MailPoet without uninstalling either plugin.

Go to: Flexi Subscription → Integrations → MailPoet and disable the integration.

After it is disabled:

  • Flexi Subscription stops sending new lifecycle events to the MailPoet integration.
  • Existing Flexi Subscription records remain unchanged.
  • Existing subscriptions continue functioning normally.
  • MailPoet itself remains installed and available for its other functionality.

Troubleshooting #

MailPoet Shows as Unavailable #

Make sure:

  • MailPoet is installed.
  • MailPoet is activated.
  • Flexi Subscription Pro is active.
  • The installed MailPoet version exposes the required MailPoet API.

MailPoet Is Active but the Integration Is Disabled #

Go to: Flexi Subscription → Integrations and enable MailPoet.

An Automation Does Not Run #

Check that:

  • MailPoet is active.
  • The Flexi Subscription MailPoet integration is enabled.
  • The MailPoet automation is active.
  • The automation uses the correct subscription lifecycle trigger.
  • The customer has a valid email address.
  • The subscription actually entered the status associated with the selected trigger.

For example, an automation listening for Subscription Activated will not execute merely because an order was created. The corresponding subscription activation lifecycle event must occur.

Subscription Works but MailPoet Automation Does Not #

Flexi Subscription intentionally isolates MailPoet failures from subscription processing.

Therefore, a subscription can still activate, renew, cancel, or expire successfully even if MailPoet cannot process the corresponding automation event.

Check your WooCommerce/Flexi Subscription logs for integration-related errors when troubleshooting this situation.

No. MailPoet is an external integration. Disabling it does not disable or cancel Flexi Subscription subscriptions.
